Maker Course: Getting Started with Microcontrollers

Dunoon Community Workshop now has a developing electronics workshop.  We are trying to interest young people in trying to develop maker, and repair skills that will become increasingly important to life. The Dunoon Community Shed is soon going to start running a course in electronics using microcontrollers.

The course will be run by a Shed member, Bob Stewart and an introduction by Bob follows. If you are interested in taking part in the course, please contact us.

I have 40 years experience of making things using electronics.  When I started in 1979, the costs were huge: about £5000-10,000, just to get started.  Today to do the same costs about £25.  Nobody realises that it is so straightforward, or what amazing fun you can have making things that others simply cannot.

We live in a world where the ability to make things is still rewarded well.  In my own case I was offered work just on the basis that I was self taught, no formal qualifications needed: though I had them.

There is a real shortage of maker skills in the UK.

The world ahead will need solutions to many straightforward problems that cannot be solved without the knowledge to do so.

The circuit right took a day to make, and worked first time.  It is based on the amazing Raspberry Pi Pico microcontroller which costs £4.  The prototype looks complex but is easier than you would think: you build it step by step like lego.  Yes it does look difficult to make: but it isn’t.  To fire it up all you need is a laptop.  What does it do?  Come along and see! Contact the shed by phone or email to sign up or get more details.
