Sunday 27th April
Hello, I’m Stoph and welcome to the first Blog post for the Dunoon Tabletop group!
This week saw plenty of card games played, a big castle siege and a dungeon adventure where the only surviving member was a Wizard who realised maybe it’s better to head home.
Our afternoon game was Magic the Gathering.
A few folks have purchased cheap decks online via Ebay and tried them against one another. The aim of the game is to summon creatures, cast spells and whittle your opponent’s life total from 40 to 0.
Thanks to my Sibling-in-law, John has cracked and is getting hooked on Magic the Gathering. It turns out his Dwarf Commander is a bully and can get extremely powerful very quickly!
Last time I understood Magic the Gathering, the UK was getting excited for the London Olympics, a lot has changed since then. So for the moment, I’m going to pretend I understand what’s happening and appreciate the artwork on the cards.
Sunday saw the forces of the Twilight Kin ally with the Horrid Ratfolk and lay siege to the castle of the honorable Abyssal Dwarves and their Halfling Lackeys in a game of Kings of War.
This fantasy miniature tabletop game uses a rank and flank system where you rotate and move entire units of soldiers at once, casting spells, firing war engines and smashing into other blocks of units to rout the enemy and claim victory.

Technically, the Abyssal Dwarves created the Rats, so for them to attack us is just rude and shows lack of loyalty. As the true heroes of the setting we expect to be treated better!
What didn’t help was that the objective we both had, was to get to the other side of the board, so we had to form up behind the gates and make a break for it. Let’s just say it didn’t go well… the Twilight Kin/Ratkin alliance won the day, a tragic state of events for the noble Abyssal Dwarves.
After this, we played a game of Dungeon Saga to wrap things up. Normally we would have 5 players, one to play the Overlord and 4 to play our intrepid heroes. However we decided to have a go at having just 3 heros to see how that would play out.
Paul played the wizard and went on a bloody killing spree, smacking things with his staff, doing cartwheels and burning foes to ash. Harley played the Dwarven Fighter and got killed repeatedly. Finley was the brash Barbarian, who had a good run until he met an undead dwarf who refused to die, and got trashed.
Leaving the Wizard alone, we called it a day. Lessons learnt, we will make sure we have a full party next time!
We meet every Sunday from 12pm. We play various RPG’s like Dungeons and Dragons, Age of Sigmar Soulbound, Lord of the Rings: One Ring, and many others. We have a wide range of Wargames from Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, Kings of War, the new Halo Flashpoint and are always keen to explore new systems. If trading card games and board games are more up your alley then we have plenty of various skill and challenge.
Everyone is welcome to join!
